Facial Expressions of Emotion: Markers of the Inner World and Mediators of the Social World

چکیده

Writers, artists, lay observers, and many behavioral scientists, such as William James, have long believed that emotional expression reveals something fundamental about the life an individual leads. For several reasons, however, the scientific study of facial expression and personal adjustment has emerged only in the past 15 years. One reason is that reliable methods for measuring facial expression were developed only quite recently. Also, it is somewhat counterintuitive, if not methodologically ill conceived (and counter to principles of statistical aggregation), to expect brief observations of facial behavior to predict cumulative life outcomes. Moreover, some social scientists argued that facial expressions provide little coherent information about an individual’s emotions, intentions, and dispositions. The study of facial expression and personal adjustment, however, informs several lines of inquiry. It is widely assumed that emotions are associated with adaptive responses to significant events, suggesting that correlations between facial expression and adjustment are likely. Studies linking individual variation in facial expression to specific outcomes, therefore, lend credence to claims about the functions of particular emotions. Accounts of personal adjustment often specify how different patterns of emotional expression lead to positive or negative outcomes, pointing to the need for relevant research. Finally, studies of facial expression and psychopathology point to possible causes, consequences, and interventions related to emotional disturbances.

Educational Facial Emotion Recognition in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Clinical Trial Study

Objective: The disability to recognize facial emotions is one of the behavioral problems in autistic children. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of education on the promotion of face recognition. Methods: This single-blind clinical trial study was conducted on children with autism. The participants were allocated with random sampling to the two groups. Autistic children in the int...

Facial Expression Recognition Based on Anatomical Structure of Human Face

Automatic analysis of human facial expressions is one of the challenging problems in machine vision systems. It has many applications in human-computer interactions such as, social signal processing, social robots, deceit detection, interactive video and behavior monitoring. In this paper, we develop a new method for automatic facial expression recognition based on facial muscle anatomy and hum...

Experiential Avoidance and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies as the Mediators in the Relationship Between Mindfulness and Social Anxiety Disorder Symptoms

Objective: The current study seeks to investigate the mechanisms through which mindfulness is related to social anxiety symptoms in a clinical sample of adults by examining whether experiential avoidance and specific cognitive emotion regulation strategies (rumination, catastrophizing, and reappraisal) mediate associations between mindfulness and social anxiety symptoms. Methods: Statistical p...

Are you upset? Distinct roles for orbitofrontal and lateral prefrontal cortex in detecting and distinguishing facial expressions of emotion.

Navigating our complex social world requires effective processing of subtle emotional signals, such as those conveyed by facial expressions. Failure to do so may underlie some of the disabling social-emotional deficits common in a range of neuropsychiatric and neurological conditions. Prefrontal cortex (PFC) has long been implicated in these processes, but the particular contributions of subreg...

Event-Related Potentials of Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processing of Emotional Faces

Introduction: Emotional stimulus is processed automatically in a bottom-up way or can be processed voluntarily in a top-down way. Imaging studies have indicated that bottom-up and top-down processing are mediated through different neural systems. However, temporal differentiation of top-down versus bottom-up processing of facial emotional expressions has remained to be clarified. The present st...
